# Prayers for Souls in Purgatory and the Divine Mercy Chaplet
*2021-06-28*

> Bill Young and John O'Rourke lead a prayer session focusing on the souls in purgatory, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, and a special litany, while also sharing the opening prayers and the Creed.

## Technical Hiccups and Opening

Bill welcomes listeners and apologizes for the recent recording delays caused by computer problems. After a brief test of the Zoom connection with Gabby, the hosts settle in and begin the prayer service.

## Opening Prayer and the Creed

Bill leads the opening prayer: “Lord Jesus, source of life, open the fountain of mercy for the whole world. O Font of life and fount of divine mercy, pour yourself upon us. O Blood and Water which flow from the heart of Jesus, a fountain of mercy for us, we trust in you.”

They then pray Psalm 130 (De Profundis): “Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord. Hear my voice, Lord, let your ears be attentive to my supplications… With the Lord there is abundant mercy and redemption.”

The Apostles’ Creed follows: “I believe in God, the Father Almighty… I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son… He suffered, died, was buried, descended into hell, rose again… I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, forgiveness of sins, resurrection of the body, and eternal life.”

## Prayer for the Souls in Purgatory

Bill reads the prayer for the souls detained in purgatory: “Most merciful Jesus, you said you desire mercy. By the streams of blood and water flowing from your heart, quench the flames of purgatory. Draw all the indulgences from the treasures of the Church and offer them for these souls. May your endless mercy reach them, and may they be relieved from their suffering.”

## Litany of Divine Mercy

John leads the Litany of Divine Mercy, with the response “I trust in you” after each petition. The litany praises Divine Mercy as the source of life, miracles, salvation, and protection, extending the prayer to all creation, the sacraments, the Church, and the dying.

## Closing Prayer and Final Blessing

Bill concludes with a prayer: “Eternal God, whose mercy is endless, look kindly upon us and increase your mercy in us, that in difficult moments we may not despair but submit to your holy will, which is love and mercy itself. Amen.”

He thanks John and Gabby for their participation and invites listeners to join the rosary for the sick in a separate session.

*May the boundless mercy of Christ bring comfort to the souls in purgatory and strengthen our own trust in His love.*
