# Praying for the souls in purgatory and the divine mercy novena
*2021-04-29*

> Bill Young and John O'Rourke lead a series of prayers focused on the souls in purgatory and the first day of the Novena to Divine Mercy.

## Interceding for the Souls in Purgatory

Welcome to Catholic Conscience 2.0. Today is Saturday, and we believe this is a particularly powerful day to pray for the souls in purgatory, especially those who venerated and honored Mary, the Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ. Our hope is that those who showed such devotion to the Blessed Mother may be among the first to be released from purgatory and enter into the glory of heaven.

## Opening Prayers and the De Profundis

We begin by invoking the ocean of mercy to open for the whole world, asking that the blood and water which gushed forth from the heart of Jesus serve as a fountain of mercy for us. We offer a specific prayer for the souls in purgatory, invoking the precious blood of the Divine Son in the sight of His most holy mother, that those most devoted to her may soon attain God's glory.

Following this, we pray the Our Father, the Hail Mary, and the Apostles' Creed. We also include a prayer from Psalm 130, verses 3 through 5: 'Lord, hear my voice. Let thy ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications. If thou, Lord, shouldest mark our iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? But there is forgiveness with thee... I wait for the Lord, my soul does wait, and for the word do I hope.'

## The Chaplet of Divine Mercy

We continue with the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, offering the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of our beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world. Through the intercession of His sorrowful passion, we beg for mercy upon ourselves and the entire world. We conclude the Chaplet by praising the Holy God, the Holy Mighty One, and the Holy Immortal One.

## Novena to Divine Mercy: Day One

Today marks day one of our Novena to Divine Mercy, which is dedicated to all mankind, especially all sinners. We ask that they be immersed in the ocean of God's mercy. We pray to the most merciful Jesus, asking Him not to look upon our sins, but upon the trust we place in His infinite goodness, that we may find refuge in His most compassionate heart.

## The Litany of Divine Mercy and the Fatima Offering

We conclude our prayer session with the Litany of Divine Mercy, affirming our trust in the mercy that accompanies us through our whole life, shields us from the fire of hell, and provides hope to despairing souls. Finally, we offer up our sufferings and sacrifices through the Fatima prayer: 'O Jesus, this is for love of You, for the conversion of poor sinners and in reparation for the offenses committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.'

*By combining the Chaplet, the Novena, and prayers for the departed, we can entrust both the living and the dead to the infinite mercy of God.*
