# Consecration to the Blood of Jesus: Praying for Our Nation and Rep. John Lewis
*2020-07-26*

> Bill Young reflects on the recent passing of Congressman John Lewis, the state of American unity, and leads a brief consecration to the Blood of Jesus for the United States and for Lewis’s soul.

## Remembering John Lewis

Congressman John Lewis, a lifelong civil‑rights activist who marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and helped pass the Voting Rights Act, was laid to rest this week. His casket was draped with the American flag, a fitting tribute to a man who devoted his life to justice, non‑violence, and the dignity of every human being.

## A Call for Unity

Bill urges both Democrats and Republicans to remember that, despite political differences, we are all part of one family—America’s family. He stresses that the flag represents the sacrifices of countless men and women in wars from the Revolution to Iraq, and that the Constitution guarantees fundamental freedoms, including free speech and religious liberty. While acknowledging the privilege of modern athletes and public figures, he warns against the notion that Independence Day is a “white‑men’s holiday.”

## Consecration to the Blood of Jesus

Lord Jesus, you who loved us and freed us from sin by your blood, I adore you and consecrate myself to you. By the help of your Spirit, may my whole life be animated by the memory of your precious blood, serving God’s will and the coming of your Kingdom. Through the blood you shed for the remission of sins, purify me, renew my heart, and make me a true instrument of brotherly love and communion. Grant me the courage to love you and my brothers and sisters, even to the point of offering my life. Help me carry your cross daily, that a drop of my blood united with yours may contribute to the redemption of the world. Make me a living stone in the Church, a zeal for Christian unity, and a missionary spirit so all may know and love God. Most precious Blood, sign of liberation and new life, preserve me in faith, hope, and love, that I may enter the promised land of paradise and sing your praise. Amen.

## Closing Thoughts

Bill notes that the prayer is especially fitting today, reminding us that while political disagreements exist, we must unite in love and service, following the example of John Lewis and the many Catholic clergy who supported the civil‑rights movement.

*Our nation’s true strength lies in unity rooted in the love and sacrifice of Christ’s blood.*
