# Day Five: The Holy Spirit’s Mercy and St. Joseph’s Example
*2020-02-21*

> Bill Young reflects on how the Holy Spirit works through St. Joseph, urging listeners to grow in holiness through prayer and interior life, and leads a litany invoking the saint.

## St. Joseph and the Holy Spirit

We begin with a reminder from Blessed William Joseph Chaminade that St. Joseph’s life was profoundly guided by the Holy Spirit. The earthly father of Jesus never acted without seeking the Spirit’s direction, and his docility allowed him to commune with God even in sleep. St. Joseph invites us to be similarly open to the Spirit so that we may be led toward holiness.

## What Holiness Really Is

Holiness is not an unattainable ideal; it is living in intimate, loving communion with God. It means observing the two great commandments—love of God and love of neighbor—avoiding sin, cultivating virtue, and living by sanctifying grace. All of this is impossible without the Holy Spirit’s presence in our lives.

## Prayer: The Essential Path

If we desire to be filled with the Holy Spirit, prayer is the absolute necessity. Through prayer we gain intimacy with God and become receptive to the Spirit’s guidance. I stress that holiness is for everyone, regardless of vocation, and it is sustained by the sacraments, a vibrant interior life, and charitable action.

## St. Joseph as Model of the Interior Life

Although not a priest, St. Joseph exemplifies the highest holiness—more prayerful than many clergy. He exercised the theological virtues of faith, hope, and charity, as well as the moral virtues of prudence, temperance, justice, and fortitude, all through constant prayer. By imitating his dedication, we can become “another Joseph” for those around us.

## Litany of St. Joseph

Lord, have mercy…
Christ, have mercy…
God the Father, have mercy on us…
Holy Trinity, one God, have mercy on us…
Holy Mary, pray for us…
St. Joseph, pray for us…
(continued with the traditional titles of St. Joseph, each ending “pray for us”).
Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, spare us, Lord. Amen.

## The Gifts of the Holy Spirit

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are special graces given to those called to a particular mission. St. Joseph, like St. Bernardine of Siena, exemplifies how divine favor equips a person to fulfill his task. By consecrating ourselves to St. Joseph, we invite the Holy Spirit to pour abundant graces into our hearts, minds, and souls.

## Practical Notes

For those interested in the consecration book, it is currently priced higher due to demand, but an e‑book or Kindle version is available and much easier to navigate. I also mention Father Michael Gaitley’s upcoming book “Three Days to Greater Love,” a 33‑day devotion beginning on St. Patrick’s Day and ending on Divine Mercy Sunday.

*Holiness is attainable for every believer through prayer, interior life, and the example of St. Joseph, who shows us how the Holy Spirit can work powerfully in ordinary lives.*
