# Our advent journey: christ comes anew
*2018-12-04*

> Bill Young begins the 2018 Advent daily reflections, focusing on the theme of God's desire to be with us and the spiritual preparation required for the coming of Christ.

## The Heart of Advent

As we begin the Advent season, we marvel at God's surprising presence in our world and in our hearts. God's most astonishing characteristic is how much He desires to be with us and enter into a relationship with us. Through scripture, we discover the long history of 'Emmanuel'—God is with us—starting in creation, continuing through the covenants with Adam and Eve, Noah, and Abraham, and reaching its fulfillment in Jesus of Nazareth.

Today, God remains hidden in the people and situations of our daily lives, always inviting us deeper into a relationship of love and service. As we reflect on this journey, we recognize that the Lord is always near.

## The First Sunday of Advent

Reflecting on the words of Pope Francis, we begin a new liturgical year. This is a journey of the People of God guided by Jesus Christ, our shepherd, toward the fulfillment of the Kingdom of God. This day allows us to experience the deep meaning of history and the beauty of the Church's mission across all humanity.

Jesus Christ is both the guide and the goal of our pilgrimage. As we move through this season, we should ask ourselves: 'What can I do this Advent to walk more fully with others?' Advent, from the Latin for 'coming,' is a time to prepare for Jesus by remembering His birth in Bethlehem, anticipating His return in glory, and celebrating His presence now in Word and Sacrament.

## Examining Our Progress in Virtue

For Monday, December 3rd, we look to the wisdom of St. Francis Xavier. He reminds us that we must not forget our progress in virtue, for those who do not move forward often go backward. He encourages a nightly examination of conscience—looking deeply into our words and deeds to see what we have omitted through neglect or what we have done poorly.

By resolving to make necessary corrections with fervor, we allow our merciful Lord to accompany us in our repentance. The central question for this day is: 'What obstacles in my progress in virtue must be attended to now?'

## Preparing the Heart for Christ

On Tuesday, December 4th, we reflect on the theme 'Christ Comes Anew.' St. Charles Borromeo teaches us that while Christ came once in the flesh, He is prepared to come again whenever we remove the obstacles in our hearts. We should prepare our hearts for His coming as if He were still entering the world for the first time.

This preparation is symbolized by the Advent wreath, with its evergreen branches and four candles. As we light the candles each week, we are reminded of the approaching celebration of Christmas and the need to dwell spiritually in His presence, bringing the riches of His grace into our lives.

*Advent is a call to remove the obstacles in our hearts so that Christ may come more fully into our lives.*
