# Faith and the ballot box: A Catholic perspective on the 2018 elections
*2018-10-22*

> Bill Young discusses the intersection of Catholic faith and civic duty, offering a critique of socialism and a guide for Florida voters based on pro-life principles.

## The Failure of Socialism

As Catholics and citizens, it is important to examine the ideologies presented to us during election cycles. Looking at the 2018 voting guides, I noticed a strong lean toward candidates supporting socialist policies. We must ask: does socialism actually work? From a religious perspective, most of our popes have been against it. Saint John Paul II, who experienced the reality of socialism firsthand in Poland, provided a clear witness to its failures.

Beyond theology, we can look at the practical results in places like Cuba and Canada. In Cuba, while healthcare is technically 'free,' it is diluted; patients often have to provide their own bedding and medicine because the state cannot supply them. In Canada, my own father's experience with socialized medicine was heartbreaking. After suffering a stroke, he was essentially given comfort care rather than aggressive treatment to recover, because the system had reached a limit on his care. Socialism often results in absolute power for politicians, which generates wealth for the party elite while the average citizen suffers.

## Evaluating Candidates and Governance

When looking at candidates for governor, such as Andrew Gillum, we must look at their record of integrity and administration. A candidate who has been the subject of FBI probes regarding gifts and grants lacks the ethical standing required for high office. Furthermore, we need administrators who can handle crises, like the hurricanes that hit Florida. We need leaders who care about the people, not just those who use populist rhetoric to gain power.

I also want to touch upon the Trump administration's policies. While the media often focuses on the negative, there have been positive moves regarding trade and labor. The new NAFTA aims to increase jobs within the U.S. and improve wages in Mexico, which can reduce the pressure of illegal immigration. Additionally, taking a firm stand against China's lack of copyright laws protects American intellectual property and the economy.

## The Primacy of the Pro-Life Position

For Catholics and Christians, the most critical issue is the protection of unborn life. Abortion is the murder of a human being, a fact supported by DNA evidence. It is a tragedy that our society accepts this. I believe our bishops and priests should be firmer in stating that any politician who supports abortion—regardless of party—should not be admitted to Holy Communion. Figures like Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden portray themselves as Catholic, but their support for abortion is incompatible with the faith.

Many argue that abortion is about 'choice,' but in my experience, it is often not the woman's choice. I have known women who were pressured into abortions by partners or family members and spent the rest of their lives in deep regret. To those who have had abortions, I say: come to the Lord. God is merciful and loves you. However, those who promote abortion for political gain are committing a grave evil.

## Florida Voter Guide and Local Issues

Regarding the Florida amendments, I support Amendment 1 and 2 to provide tax relief for homeowners and renters. I oppose Amendment 4, as I believe restoring voting rights to felons should not be a blanket policy but should require proof of rehabilitation. I also support measures that restrict the ability of the government to easily increase taxes and fees, and those that bar state officials from becoming paid lobbyists.

On a local level in Cooper City, I highly recommend candidates with a proven track record of integrity. For example, someone who has served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney brings a level of honesty and adherence to facts that is essential for local government. We should vote for those who are overqualified and committed to the truth rather than those who simply fit a political mold.

## Consoling the Heart of Jesus

To close, I want to encourage you to join in a spiritual retreat. I have been following Father Michael Gaitley's retreat, 'Consoling the Heart of Jesus.' It reminds us that Jesus desires our friendship and our consolation, especially regarding the agony He felt in the Garden of Olives. Even now, in His eternal present, He feels those pains, and our prayers of love can console Him.

I invite you to join us for a special Patriotic Rosary at St. David's Catholic Church in Plantation, Florida. We will also pray the Rosary to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary for the salvation of our families and the world, and seek the protection of St. Michael the Archangel to defend us in battle against the wickedness of the devil.

*When casting your vote, remember that the protection of human life is the primary principle that should guide a Catholic's conscience.*
