> Bill Young reflects on Day 7 of the 33‑day “Merciful Love” retreat, explaining how Mary, the New Eve, heals the wound of original sin and leads us to the mercy flowing from Christ’s pierced side.

## Recap of the Retreat

We are now on Day 7 of our 33‑day do‑it‑yourself retreat toward consecration to Divine Mercy, based on Father Michael Gately’s guide. Earlier days covered Abraham as the father in faith, Mary as our spiritual mother, her pilgrimage of faith, her trials, and her song of faith. Today’s theme is the “New Eve of Light and Life.”

## Mary as the New Eve

The heart of today’s reflection is trust, illustrated by Abraham and Mary. While Abraham trusted God’s promises, Mary surpasses him by receiving the grace to trust. Faith is a gift of grace, not a human work, and we obtain it through Mary. The first Eve brought original sin, distorting our image of God and causing us to doubt and hide from Him. God therefore chose a new Eve—announced from the beginning (Genesis 3:15)—to heal that wound. As a gentle, motherly figure, Mary can win hearts that often recoil from Christ, and she brings those hearts to Him.

## Mary, Mediatrix of Grace

The Church teaches Mary as Mediatrix of Grace, not the source of grace itself. Christ’s pierced side is the fountain of grace; Mary leads us to that source. Her own heart was pierced on Calvary, fulfilling Simeon’s prophecy (Luke 2:35). This suffering makes her an instrument that opens our hearts to receive God’s mercy. St. Paul speaks of completing what is lacking in Christ’s sufferings (Colossians 1:24); through united suffering with Christ, we can obtain grace for others.

## Our Participation in Mercy

Christ’s love is an infinite ocean of mercy, but many close their hearts to it. By uniting our suffering with Christ’s, we can help others accept the gift of salvation. No human can make a greater difference than Mary in this regard, because she brings us to the New Adam on the Cross, encouraging us to drink from the fountain of eternal life.

## Listener Questions

Gabby and Sandra asked about the meaning of the New Eve. The “old” Eve introduced death through sin; the “new” Eve—Mary—offers life, leading the Church to proclaim “death through Eve, life through Mary.” This contrast underscores Mary’s role in restoring humanity to the hope of sinless life.

*Mary, the New Eve, uniquely draws us to Christ’s boundless mercy.*
