# Advent’s Spiritual Focus and Watching for God’s Advent
*2017-12-07*

> Bill Young reflects on the seriousness of Advent, the feast of St. Ambrose, and how we can watch for Christ’s coming in everyday life.

## The Deep Meaning of Advent

Advent is more than festive decorations and a charming infant in a manger. It calls us to remember that the King who comes is the Lord of hosts, the Angelic armies who fulfill God’s will. In this season we celebrate Christ’s presence in the world, even amid its troubles, and we are invited to keep our eyes and hearts open to His coming.

## Where Do We Experience Christ Now?

I ask myself, “Where and when do I most experience Christ’s presence?” The answer is not in a distant, abstract realm but in the concrete moments of daily life—standing with outstretched arms, looking upward, ready to walk forward in hope. Our faith is a wakeful expectation that engages all our senses, preparing us to see Christ hidden among the people around us.

## Feast of St. Ambrose

Today we honor St. Ambrose, Bishop and Doctor of the Church (337–397). A Doctor of the Church is not a medical title but a recognition of a teacher whose doctrine has shaped the whole Church. Ambrose’s legacy reminds us that true wisdom comes from deep learning and sanctity.

## Living the Little Things

St. Teresa of Ávila taught that small acts of love prepare us for greater responsibilities. This Advent, let us commit to little prayers, kind words, or charitable gifts. Even a modest offering to the Marian Helpers (marianhelpers.org, phone 413‑998‑30) can make a difference for the sick and dying.

## Looking Ahead

Tomorrow we will celebrate the conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Many will also consecrate themselves to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Queen of Heaven and Earth, our refuge and loving Mother.

*Advent calls us to watch attentively for God’s presence in the ordinary moments of our lives.*
