# The Second Sorrow: The Flight into Egypt
*2017-05-29*

> Bill Young leads a chaplet of the Seven Sorrows, focusing on the second sorrow—the Flight into Egypt—while reflecting on the Apostles’ Creed, the Our Father, and the Hail Mary.

## Opening Prayer and Creed

Good morning, I’m Bill Young. In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Amen. O God, come to my aid; O Lord, make haste to help me. Glory to the Father, to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. We pray the Apostles’ Creed: “I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth; I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; descended into hell; on the third day rose again; ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.”

## Offering the Chaplet

My God, I offer you this Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows for the greater glory of your most holy Mother. I will meditate on her suffering and partake in it. I beseech you to pour out tears upon us, that all sinners may be truly sorry for our sins. Grant us a perfect sorrow for our sins, through the help of your grace, that we may resolve never to offend you again. Amen.

## The Second Sorrow: The Flight into Egypt

The second sorrow is the Flight into Egypt (Matthew 2:13‑15). After the Magi departed, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod will seek the child’s life.” Joseph rose, took the child and Mary, and they left that night for Egypt, where they remained until Herod’s death. This fulfilled what the Lord had spoken through the prophets: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”

## Personal Reflection and Prayers

We pause for a brief personal reflection, reciting the Our Father: “Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.”

Then we pray the Hail Mary several times, each with the same intention: “Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.”

## Closing Prayer and Hymn

Mother of mercy, keep our hearts mindful of the sufferings of Jesus during His Passion. Let us pray, O Mary, virgin of Israel, who bore the trial of all mothers. Grant hope and courage to those who care for the birth and growth of future generations, the guardians of God’s design for the world. Amen.

We conclude with a hymn to Our Lady, Queen of the Holy Rosary, offering our roses of gratitude from the garden of our Father, gathering white, red, and gold blossoms in honor of her. May the mysteries of her life and the Sacred Life of Jesus inspire us always. Amen.

*In meditating on Mary’s Flight into Egypt, we are called to trust God’s protection and to offer our own sorrows in union with hers.*
