# Becoming a Gift for Others
*2017-03-10*

> Bill reflects on Pope Francis’ Lenten meditation about being a gift to others, and leads a heartfelt prayer for his aunt’s liver surgery and for peace amid illness.

## The Lenten Reflection

The reading for today comes from Romans 5:5: “God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” Pope Francis reminds us that God’s love and mercy are free gifts that we cannot earn. Because we have received salvation freely, we are called to give freely as well. The Holy Spirit, a gift to us, empowers us to become gifts to others—agents of reconciliation, forgiveness, and light. When the Spirit transforms our lives, we cannot keep that light to ourselves; we must share it.

## Living in the Power of the Holy Spirit

I often turn to the Holy Spirit when I face a dilemma, asking, “Lord, what does this mean?” Usually, an answer comes the next morning. The Holy Spirit is our friend, guide, and source of true knowledge, working with the Father and the Son. By staying open to the Spirit, we allow Him to shape us into instruments of God’s love for the world.

## Prayer for Healing and Peace

Let us pray for my aunt Suzanne in Toronto, who is scheduled for a liver operation on March 13th. May her surgery be successful and the cancer be overcome.

Lord, you heal all infirmities. I come before you, a soul burdened by pain and fear. Grant Suzanne swift recovery and relief from her illness. May your healing power be upon her body, and may your peace fill her heart.

Lord Jesus, I also pray for those of us who suffer not only illness but deep anguish. Health without peace is empty. Grant us the peace that only you can give, the peace that comes from total surrender to your will. Strengthen us with your consolation, and let your love be our lasting hope. Amen.

*When the Holy Spirit transforms us, we become living gifts that bring God’s love, healing, and peace to others.*
