# Why I Support Trump Over Pro‑Choice Candidates
*2016-09-22*

> Bill Young explains why, as a Catholic who values the Church’s pro‑life teaching, he cannot vote for pro‑choice politicians and therefore chooses to support Donald Trump despite his flaws.

## The Pro‑Life Mandate

The bishops have declared that the right to life is a fundamental right, and the Catholic Church’s position on protecting human life is unequivocal. Because of this, I cannot vote for anyone who supports abortion. Killing the unborn is murder, and there is no justification for it in any other part of our society.

## Choosing Between Pro‑Life and Pro‑Choice Candidates

In the 2016 presidential race we have one pro‑life candidate and one pro‑choice candidate. The pro‑choice candidates—Hillary Clinton and Senator Tim Kaine—cannot be supported, regardless of any other policy positions they may hold. The bishops teach that politicians are responsible not only for their personal beliefs but also for the laws they enact, so voting for a pro‑choice candidate would be contrary to our faith.

## Why I Am Voting for Donald Trump

I do not consider Trump to be my ideal Republican, but he is the only candidate who does not support abortion. I attended a Trump rally and saw many working‑class people, including a young Black volunteer, who are desperate for jobs. Trump’s promises to strengthen the military, secure the border, and protect American lives align with the Church’s concern for the common good. While I disagree with his style and some statements, I do not view him as a bigot; he employs people of many races and has shown charitable generosity.

Additionally, the Supreme Court will soon decide the fate of abortion rights, and we need judges who respect both the Constitution and the sanctity of life.

## Prayer for Guidance and the Unborn

We must pray for the Holy Spirit’s guidance in this election, for our leaders, and especially for the unborn. As Pastor John Hegey reminds us, America needs healing from racial division, greed, and selfishness. Let us pray that God grants us wisdom to choose leaders who protect innocent life and that the Pope’s call for the protection of the vulnerable is heard in the halls of power.

## A Saint’s Example

Today is the feast of St. Clare of Assisi, who, despite early hardships, devoted her life to serving the poor and living a holy life. May her example inspire us to act with compassion and courage in the public square.

*As Catholics, our vote must reflect the Church’s unwavering defense of life, even if it means supporting a flawed candidate.*
