# Jesus, our living God

> Bill Young reflects on the presence of the living God in the world, the power of prayer, and the importance of the sacraments in the life of a Catholic.

## Finding God in the Living Artifacts

During my tours in Rome and Assisi, I had the opportunity to see the artifacts of our Lord Jesus Christ, from the cross to the sign Pontius Pilate placed on top of it, reading 'Jesus, King of the Jews' in Latin, Hebrew, and Greek. These are living artifacts that remind us that there was a living God and a living Jesus. The good news is that He is still with us today, and He reveals Himself to us in many ways through our prayers.

## Trusting God's Plan

I have been listening to Father Chris and Father Michael Gaitley, and I highly recommend the '33 Days to Morning Offering' retreat for Mary. Father Chris once shared a powerful homily about how we often pray for specific answers, but God has a greater plan. Father Chris prayed to get married, but God called him to the priesthood instead—specifically as a Marian priest. He dedicated his life to Mary and Jesus, showing us that God's plan is always superior to our own desires.

## The Shield of the Trinity

Recently, I noticed a recurring image: two flowers on top and one on the bottom, and later, three birds in the same formation. I looked it up and discovered this is the 'Shield of the Trinity,' a common depiction from the fifth century used to explain the nature of the Trinity. When I asked the Holy Spirit for enlightenment on why I kept seeing this, I realized it emphasizes that wherever Jesus is, the Father and the Holy Spirit are right there with Him. This is especially true in Holy Communion; when we receive the Body and Blood of our Lord, the living God, the Father and the Holy Spirit are present with Him.

## The Gift of the Sacraments

Many people wonder if God is really here on earth. As Catholics, we believe He is present in the Eucharist and in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Some may question why they should confess their sins to a priest, but God gave the apostles the right to forgive sins, and Peter held the keys to heaven. The priest acts in the person of Christ. Confession is a gift for our own good, providing absolution and spiritual healing. I have personally felt a glorious warmth during confession, confirming that God is present and listening.

## The Power of Intercession

Prayer truly helps. I recently re-shared a 'Patriotic Rosary' for the fifty states of the U.S. around September 11th. While we cannot stop every act of terrorism, I believe prayer provides protection. I also find great strength in the intercession of the saints, our Mother Mary, and the angels. I am currently praying a novena to St. Michael the Archangel, which helps guard against nightmares and the influence of evil.

*God is a living presence in our lives, accessible through the sacraments, the intercession of the saints, and a trusting heart that submits to His divine plan.*
