# Prayer for the UK on the Feast of St. John Fisher
*2016-06-22*

> Bill Young reflects on the martyrdom of St. John Fisher and prays for wisdom for the United Kingdom as it decides its future relationship with the European Union.

## St. John Fisher’s Witness

Today is the feast day of St. John Fisher, bishop, cardinal, and martyr. He was executed in 1535 by order of King Henry VIII after refusing to grant the king’s divorce and to endorse a break with the Church. Fisher’s steadfast fidelity to the teachings of the Church cost him his life, but his witness endures.

## A Historic Moment for the United Kingdom

The United Kingdom is currently facing a pivotal decision about whether to remain in the European Union. Polls suggest a roughly 50‑50 split, making the outcome uncertain. I’m praying that the UK’s leaders and citizens will discern the right path for the nation’s common good.

## Prayer for Guidance

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Lord, you love each of us, but when we allow sin to take root in our hearts we turn away from you and bring ruin upon ourselves. Through the intercession of St. John Fisher, who suffered death with great courage for the love of truth and justice, grant us the example of laying down our lives for Christ’s sake. May we, following his witness, seek the truth and work for the good of all, that we may share in the heavenly reward. Amen.

## Closing Blessing

God bless you all, and may the Holy Spirit guide the United Kingdom toward a decision that serves the common good.

*May St. John Fisher’s fidelity inspire the UK to choose wisely for the sake of truth and the common good.*
