# Novena to the Divine Mercy – Day One
*2016-06-02*

> Bill Young introduces the first day of the Divine Mercy novena found in the diary of St. Fascina,{}praying for the souls in purgatory and explaining how the prayer can be said any time of year.

## Introduction and Resources

Good afternoon, I’m Bill Young and welcome to the Prayer and Lunch podcast. This is the 3 o’clock hour, the hour of Divine Mercy. I want to begin a special prayer for the souls in purgatory. On my Facebook page and Twitter (prayerandlunch) you’ll find two talks: one by Fr. Mike on the Eucharist and one by Fr. Dan on the souls in purgatory, based on the revelation given to St. Fascina. Feel free to listen to those recordings on YouTube.

## The Novena of St. Fascina

The novena we are about to pray is recorded in the diary of St. Fascina (1209‑1229). The Lord dictated it to her and instructed that it be prayed before the Feast of Mercy, beginning on Good Friday. The prayer may also be recited at any time of the year. Jesus said to St. Fascina, “During these nine days you will bring souls before My mercy so that they may draw strength, refreshment, and whatever graces they need in hardship, especially at the hour of death. Each day you will bring a different group of souls into the ocean of My mercy, and I will bring them into the house of My Father. I will deny nothing to any soul for whom you intercede.”

## Opening Prayer

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Lord, come to my aid. O Lord, make haste to help me.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended into hell, rose again on the third day, ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father; He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

## Day One Prayer

Today, bring all mankind, especially sinners, into the ocean of Your mercy, and console Me in the bitter grief caused by the loss of souls.

Most merciful Jesus, whose very nature is compassion, have mercy on us and pardon us. Look not upon our sins but upon the trust we place in Your infinite goodness. Receive us into Your most compassionate heart and allow us to remain dear to You for eternity. We ask this through the love that unites the Father and the Holy Spirit.

O fountain of Divine Mercy, refuge of sinners, sea of compassion, come to the aid of those who humbly invoke You. Father, turn Your merciful grace upon all mankind, especially poor sinners, that we may praise You in everlasting joy. Amen.

## Closing

May God bless you all. Thank you, Father Chris, for allowing me to use the image of the Divine Mercy as a reminder of St. Fascina’s revelation.

*Each day of the novena draws a different group of souls into the boundless mercy of Christ, reminding us to pray continually for the salvation of all.*
