# Saturday, Week 2 of Lent – The Way of Holiness
*2016-02-27*

> Bill Young reflects on the feast of St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows and explores how the call to holiness is a vocation for every Christian, especially during Lent.

## Welcome and Liturgical Context

Good morning. I’m Bill Young, and welcome to the Prayer at Lunch podcast. Today is Saturday of the second week of Lent. Our reading comes from Pope Francis’s “Renew Our Hearts,” a personal invitation to Lenten conversion. The title for today’s reflection is “A Wave of Holiness.”

## St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows

The feast day we celebrate is that of St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows (1838‑1862). He lived only twenty‑four years, dying of tuberculosis, much like St. Teresa of the Little Flower. Both saints showed that holiness can be lived in the smallest moments—through simple prayers, acts of kindness, and compassion for the poor.

## Jesus, the Way, the Truth, and the Life

Our Gospel reading is John 14:6: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” This reminds us that holiness is not a privilege reserved for a few; it is a vocation for everyone. We are called to walk the path of holiness that has a name and a face—Jesus Christ, who teaches us to become saints.

## Living the Beatitudes

Christ shows us the way of holiness through the Beatitudes (Matthew 5‑12). The kingdom of heaven belongs to those who place their hope not in material things but in love for God. It belongs to the humble, who do not judge others, to those who suffer with the suffering, and to those who rejoice with those who rejoice. Such people become instruments of reconciliation and peace.

## A Lenten Prayer

Let us pray: “Jesus, help me to follow your ways more closely during this Lenten season.” Amen.

*Holiness is a beautiful, everyday path that calls each of us to love, humility, and mercy.*
