# First Sunday of Lent – Just Say No
*2016-02-15*

> Bill Young reflects on the Gospel reading for the First Sunday of Lent, urging listeners to hear God’s voice in Scripture and to say “no” to temptation during the Lenten journey.

## Opening Thoughts

Good afternoon. I’m Bill Young, and welcome to Prayer in Lent. Today we’re doing a “Renew Our Hearts” reflection, inviting us into the Lenten conversation Pope Francis calls us to. I hope everyone had a blessed Valentine's Day and was able to spend time with family.

## The Gospel’s Call to Victory

Our Gospel for the First Sunday of Lent reminds us of the trials Jesus faced before beginning His public ministry. Those trials left Him victorious and prepared Him to proclaim the Kingdom of God. In those 40 days of solitude, He confronted Satan, overcame temptation, and emerged triumphant. Through Him we share in that victory, but we must protect it in our daily lives.

## Walking the Lenten Desert

As we cross the Lenten desert, we place ourselves on the same path Jesus walked—the road that leads to life. The desert is the place where both the voice of God and the voice of the tempter can be heard. How do we discern God’s voice? We hear it in His Word. That is why knowing Scripture is essential; without it we cannot respond properly to the snares of the evil one.

## Saying “No” to Temptation

The Lenten desert helps us say “no” to the wilderness of idolatry and to make courageous choices in accordance with the Gospel. It also strengthens our solidarity with others who are walking the same journey.

## Prayer

Jesus, help me to hear your voice, to know your Word, and to say “no” to every temptation that comes my way.

*Lent invites us to hear God’s Word and courageously say “no” to the devil’s lies.*
