# Open our hearts to Jesus
*2015-12-15*

> In this Advent reflection, Bill Young discusses the life of Blessed Mary Frances Schervier and the power of God's Word to penetrate the heart.

## The Legacy of Blessed Mary Frances Schervier

Today is the feast day of Blessed Mary Frances Schervier. Born in Prussia in 1819, she possessed a profound dedication to the poor, the needy, and the sick, serving as a precursor to the work of Mother Teresa. She established a foundation in the United States in 1858 and traveled here in 1862 to assist the wounded during the Civil War, returning again in 1867. Because of her religious order and her service, she has deep roots in this country. Blessed Mary Frances, we ask that you pray for us, for our needs, and for the homeless.

## The Living Word

Our reading today is from Hebrews 4:12: "For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart."

## A Prayer for Openness

As we move through Advent, let us pray: O Jesus, make my heart open to the Word of God. Make my heart open to goodness and to the beauty of God every day. Make my heart open to You. You knock at our hearts to enter and grant us peace of the soul. Let us open our hearts to You. Amen.

*We are called to open our hearts to the living Word of God to find true peace and goodness.*
