> Bill Young leads a heartfelt prayer to Mary for the sick, especially invoking protection and health for Pope Francis, based on a prayer found in a French church.

## Opening Prayer for Pope Francis

Good afternoon. This is Bill Young, and welcome to Prayer and Lunch. Today we offer a special prayer to Mary, Mother of the Sick. We pray that Pope Francis remains healthy. I heard at Mass in the basilica that he stumbled, the second time in a few days. Lord Jesus, please protect our Pope. He has a great mission for the world, and we need him more than he needs us. He is the Lamb of God, and on earth he leads his flock. He promised a year of mercy for us in December. Grant him physical and mental health, that he may continue to serve you and his people.

## Background of the Prayer

This prayer was found written on a piece of paper left under the statue of the Virgin Mary in the church of La Roche‑Pozay in France. It is a simple, powerful prayer addressed to Mary, asking her to stay at the bedside of all who are suffering.

## Prayer to Mary, Mother of the Sick

Stay, O Mary, at the bedside of all the sick of the world—those who at this moment have lost consciousness and are going to die; those who are enduring a long agony; those who have lost all hope of healing; those who cannot look at themselves because they are poor; those who would like to walk but are immobile.

Stay, O Mary, with those who would like to rest, yet poverty compels them to continue to work; with those who are seeking a less painful position in their bed and are able to find it; with those tormented by the troubles of their families; with those who must renounce the plans they once desired for their future.

Especially with those who do not believe in a better life; with those who revolt and swear against God; with those who do not know or remember Christ’s sacrifice. Amen.

*May Mary’s comforting presence bring healing to the sick and strength to those who shepherd the Church.*
