# Praying the Chaplet of the Wound on the Shoulder of Jesus

> Bill Young introduces a little‑known chaplet devoted to the unrecorded wound on Jesus’ shoulder, shares the prayer text, and offers a heartfelt intention for a family in need of faith.

## Introducing the Chaplet

Good afternoon, I’m Bill Young. Today, July 19, we’re in sunny South Florida and I want to share a chaplet I recently discovered: the Chaplet of the Wound on the Shoulder of Jesus. According to tradition, St. Bernard asked the Lord which of His sufferings was the greatest and unrecorded. The Lord replied that He bore a grievous wound on His shoulder while carrying the cross—more painful than the others and not mentioned in the Gospels. He promised that whoever honors this wound with devotion will receive any request made through its virtue, the remission of venial sins, protection from sudden death, and a visitation by the Blessed Virgin before death.

## The Indulgence and the Prayer

Pope Eugene III, at St. Bernard’s request, granted an indulgence to those who recite the chaplet and carry it with devotion. The chaplet consists of five Our Fathers, five Hail Marys, and five Glory Be’s, offered for the Holy Trinity and for the Pope. Below is the prayer I use:

“Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, through the precious wound on the shoulder of our Lord Jesus Christ, grant us the grace we ask. By the intercession of the Blessed Virgin, may we receive mercy and the remission of our venial sins.”

Then follow the standard prayers:

Our Father…
Hail Mary… (repeated five times)
Glory Be… (repeated five times)

The chaplet concludes with a short prayer repeated ten times, invoking the Holy Trinity and the holy wound on the shoulder of Christ.

## A Personal Intention

I offered this chaplet for a dear friend—a professor at a Catholic college who publicly identifies as an atheist. His wife and children are also without faith. I prayed that the whole family might come to know Christ, that his youngest son might become a priest, and that the professor himself might become a great advocate for the Lord.

## Closing Prayer and Blessing

After the chaplet I recited the Apostles’ Creed:

“I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth… I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord… I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.”

May God bless you all, especially Pope Francis on his upcoming trips to the United States and Cuba, and may all priests be strengthened in their ministry.

*Honoring the hidden wound on Christ’s shoulder opens a channel of grace that can transform even the most unlikely hearts.*
