*2015-07-16*

> Bill Young shares the rite used to bless and present the Scapular of Mount Carmel on the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, including the prayers and symbols involved.

## Receiving the Scapular

Good afternoon, I’m Bill Young. This morning at the 9 a.m. Mass I received my Scapular of Mount Carmel. I’ll post a few pictures later; they’re small, but they show the Scapular hanging around the neck as a sign of belonging to the Carmelite family and to Mary, Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

## The Rite of Blessing and Presentation

The following prayer is traditionally said by the priest when the Scapular is blessed, but anyone who has already received the Scapular may pray it as well.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Lord, come to my aid; make haste to help me. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, without end. Amen.

**Apostles’ Creed**
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again; He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father; He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

## Prayer for the Scapular

Lord, hear my prayer; grant us Your kindness and mercy, and bring us salvation. May the Scapular, sanctified by the right hand of Jesus Christ, be a sign of our love for Him and for His Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel. Through her intercession may we be protected from the attacks of the enemy and remain in Your grace until death. You who live and reign forever, hear us. Amen.

The priest then sprinkles a little holy water on the Scapular, invoking the Virgin’s protection:

May the most holy Virgin, by her merits, keep this Scapular free from sin, protect its wearer from all harm, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen.

By the power granted to me, I admit you to share in all the spiritual works performed with the merciful help of Jesus Christ, through the religious of Mount Carmel, in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

## Final Blessing

May Almighty God, who created heaven and earth, bless you for receiving this Scapular in the communion of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel. We ask that He crush the head of the ancient serpent at the hour of our death and grant us the palm and crown of everlasting inheritance, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

*Wearing the Scapular of Mount Carmel connects us to Mary’s protection and to the spiritual fruits of the Carmelite tradition.*
