# Why We Should Acknowledge Mary as Our True Mother

## A Day of Prayer and Mother’s Day

Good afternoon. This is Bill Young, and welcome to the Prayer at Lunch podcast. Today is recognized as a National Day of Prayer, and it also falls in May, a month when we especially honor Jesus’ Mother, Mary. Moreover, Sunday is Mother’s Day, a time to celebrate all mothers.

## Why Even Non‑Catholics Should Consider Mary

I want to speak to my friends who are Christians of other traditions, as well as those of different religions, who may not have a devotion to Mary. Think about how we sometimes forget to honor our own mothers while they are alive. When family members—cousins, aunts, nephews—recognize a mother, it brings great joy. If Jesus, the Son of God, would be delighted when his mother is honored, then Mary, his mother, would also be deeply pleased when we acknowledge her.

## A Simple Request

So I ask everyone, regardless of faith, to pray at least one Hail Mary for a mother today. If you can, add a second Hail Mary on Mother’s Day. Let us pray together:

In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

## Closing Thought

I love Mary as the true mother she is, and I hope you will join me in honoring her.

*Recognizing Mary as our true mother deepens our gratitude for all mothers and draws us closer to Christ.*
