# God is the true light

> Bill Young reflects on the prologue of the Gospel of John and the tragedy of the world rejecting the True Light as we approach Holy Week.

## The Word Made Flesh

Today is Thursday of the fifth week of Lent. Our scripture reading comes from John 1:9-11: 'The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him. Yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him.'

## The Tension of Salvation

As we approach Holy Week, the tension builds in the story of our salvation. In the prologue of his gospel account, John offers us a magnificent poetic expression of these tensions. As had happened in ages past, God's Word made flesh is again rejected. The True Light, sent to lead us into love, is rejected.

## A Pattern of Rejection

How can this be? More rejections will follow on Palm Sunday when we hear in the reading of the Passion of one of the Lord's chosen denying any knowledge of Jesus. This leads us to reflect on our own lives and how often we have flatly rejected Jesus or looked the other way.

*As we enter Holy Week, we are called to examine the times we have rejected the True Light in our own lives.*
