# Ash Wednesday: God loves us no matter what
*2015-02-10*

> Bill Young reflects on the beginning of Lent and the call to join the crowd in listening to the Sermon on the Mount.

## Joining the crowd

Today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. We are reflecting on a theme called 'Join the Crowd.' Today's Gospel is taken from the Sermon on the Mount, found in chapters 5, 6, and 7 of Matthew's Gospel. As you listen to the passage at Mass or read the sermon, I encourage you to imagine yourself as part of that crowd, eagerly waiting for a message that will change you and help you become a better parent, spouse, or a more fulfilled person.

## The love of Christ

Imagine sitting there with those you love, holding your children close, hoping that the word from Jesus will make a difference in their lives and keep them safe on the right path. Jesus speaks so tenderly to His disciples, and He speaks that way to you and those you love. Truly feel that love.

## Practicing Lent

It is from this sermon that we find the three elements of good Lenten practice: giving to the poor, fasting, and prayer. As we get ready to observe Lent, I suggest trying to get to Mass to receive ashes on your forehead. Afterward, sit for a while and ask God to help you draw closer to Jesus and to those you love during this holy season.

*Lord Jesus, be with me and those I love during this season of Lent; help us to know you better and to love each other as you love us.*
