# First Week of Lent: Scripture, Prayer, and Giving
*2015-01-25*

> Bill reflects on the essence of Lent—prayer, fasting, and almsgiving—while reading Romans 8:31‑34 and offering a brief meditation on Christ’s sacrifice.

## The Three Pillars of Lent

Father Robert Barron reminds us that Lent is built on three practices: daily prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. For prayer, we might recite a short devotion such as the Jesus Prayer or spend time with the Rosary. Fasting helps us detach from worldly comforts, and almsgiving calls us to share what we have with those in need.

## A Call to Simple Charity

We receive countless requests for donations, but even a modest $5 contribution to a charity can make a difference. I’m involved with the Cancerbills.org (Aero Anchor Cancer Foundation), which assists families with children battling cancer. These families often face mounting expenses—hospital bills, rent, car payments—while they cannot work. Any contribution helps relieve that burden.

## Scripture Reading: Romans 8:31‑34

“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us everything else? Who will bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is condemned? It is Christ who died, and was raised, who sits at the right hand of God and intercedes for us.”

## Reflection on Christ’s Sacrifice

Consider the magnitude of God’s love in handing over His Son for the salvation of all. In light of that, we have no reason to complain. Paul’s words to the Romans are not abstract theology but a call to recognize God’s boundless love for every person. Christ’s exaltation, rooted in His willingness to give His life, becomes our source of hope.

Lent is a time of purification and enlightenment—a gift that creates space in our hearts for God. The sacrifices we make, whether recalling Abraham’s ancient offering or Christ’s Passion, are meant to empty us of sin and selfishness so that we may be filled with grace, truth, and the beauty of God.

## Prayer

Lord, fill us with your love. Empty our hearts of sin and selfishness, and pour in your grace, truth, and beauty. Amen.

*Lent invites us to deepen prayer, practice modest generosity, and open our hearts to the transformative love of Christ.*
