# Joseph, a faithful and just man
*2014-12-21*

> Bill reflects on St. Joseph’s response to God’s call during Advent, highlighting his humility, obedience, and freedom in surrendering his own plans.

## Opening prayer and Scripture

We begin with the words of the Angel of the Lord to Joseph: “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:20‑21).

## Joseph’s readiness to hear God

The Gospel of Matthew shows us the greatness of St. Joseph’s heart. He had his own reasonable plans for life, yet God was reserving a greater mission for him. Joseph was always listening to God’s voice, deeply sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s secret will, and attentive to the messages that rose from the depths of his heart and from on high.

## Letting go of personal ambition

Instead of persisting in his own agenda or allowing bitterness to poison his soul, Joseph made himself available to the bewildering news God gave him. He did not cling to pride or resentment; rather, he embraced the unexpected path with humility.

## Freedom through surrender

By accepting God’s design, Joseph became freer, not because he lost his own will but because he found his true freedom in renouncing selfish desires. He offered his life, his possessions, and his very self to the will of God, showing us how interior freedom is rooted in obedience.

## Applying Joseph’s example today

When we face our own plans and doubts, Joseph reminds us to stay open to God’s surprising invitations. May we, like him, respond without reservation, trusting that God’s greater purpose will unfold.

*St. Joseph teaches us that true freedom is found in surrendering our own plans to God’s loving will.*
