# We Are Never Alone
*2014-12-08*

> Bill reflects on the Advent prayer from Pope Francis, emphasizing that Christ is our ever‑present advocate and urging us to reach out to those on the margins.

## The Advocate Who Walks With Us

We begin with the words of 1 John 2:1: “My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ.” In our Advent journey, Pope Francis reminds us that we are never alone. Christ, both crucified and risen, is our advocate who defends us and guides us.

## A Community of Faith

We are surrounded by a multitude of brothers and sisters who live their faith in silence and in concealment—at home, at work, in joy and in hardship. Their daily witness brings the world into the lordship of God’s love.

## Nourishing Our Relationship with God

Our relationship with God is not a treasure to be hidden away; it must be nurtured each day. We do this by listening to Scripture, praying, and participating in the sacraments—especially reconciliation and the Eucharist.

## Going Out to the Outskirts

Love calls us to step out of ourselves and meet others, especially those who are forgotten or on the margins. They are the ones most in need of understanding, comfort, and help. We are invited to bring the living presence of a merciful, loving Jesus to them.

## A Prayer for Outreach

Jesus, help me reach out to others who are left out. Amen.

*In Advent, we are reminded that Christ’s constant presence empowers us to be Christ’s hands to those who feel most alone.*
