# St. Catherine of Alexandria – A Prayer for Purity, Love, and Faith
*2014-11-24*

> Bill Young reflects on the feast of St. Catherine of Alexandria, recounts her martyrdom, and offers a prayer asking for her intercession to grow in purity, love, and faith.

## The Life and Martyrdom of St. Catherine

St. Catherine of Alexandria, a virgin and martyr, lived around 310 AD. Tradition holds that she was born into a noble family in Alexandria and came to the Christian faith after a visionary encounter. When the emperor arranged a marriage for her, she refused, denouncing his persecution of Christians. As a result, she was arrested, tortured, and ultimately martyred. Legend says that angels carried her body to Mount Sinai.

## Why We Celebrate Her Feast

Catherine’s feast has been observed in the Eastern Church since the ninth century. Her steadfastness in the face of oppression reminds us that true devotion may require great sacrifice, yet it also offers a model of intellectual courage and spiritual purity.

## A Personal Reflection

Bill shares how the memory of Catherine’s willingness to live out her faith despite hardship inspires us to examine our own commitments. He likens the joy of creating something for a loved one—whether a crafted gift, a handwritten note, or a simple act of service—to the deeper joy that comes from offering ourselves to God.

## Prayer to St. Catherine

Heavenly Father, through the intercession of St. Catherine of Alexandria, grant us the grace to grow in purity, love, and faith. Help us to follow her example of courageous witness, that we may stand firm in truth and extend compassion to all whom we encounter.

*St. Catherine’s example calls us to pursue holiness with courage, trusting that God’s love sustains us through every trial.*
