# O come, Emmanuel: preparing the heart for Christmas
*2009-12-21*

> Bill Young reflects on the spiritual preparation for Christmas, the artistic inspiration drawn from the Nativity, and the lifelong journey of faith.

## Preparing for the Nativity

Good morning. Today we are reading from the book 'A Joyful Journey: Daily Meditations and Activities for Advent and Christmas.' It is Wednesday of the fourth week of Advent, which means we are only two days away from Christmas. We are all very busy right now—shopping for the last few items and sending out cards—but it is more important that we prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ.

## The Inspiration of the Christ Child

Have you ever stopped to think about how much music and art have been inspired by the story of the birth of Jesus? From Christmas carols and children's songs to the great works of master painters and sculptors, the artistic imagination is captured by this simple story. In a world of movement and unrest, there is a beauty inspired by the God-child. Even if some are not compelled to acknowledge Him, the truth remains true: at Christmas, God came to meet us.

## A Lifetime of Faith

I encourage you to consider a resolution to seek the truth of the human faith and the nature of our faith. Our faith is rich enough to merit a lifetime of study and a faithful way of life. Keep learning and worshipping with your freedom, and do not outgrow the Christ child.

## Advent Activity and Prayer

For today's activity, write the number seven on a card and let your children put it in the world; it is a simple way to engage together. We conclude with a prayer: O come, Emmanuel, God with us, save your people. Rejoice, for you come to our world. As you were born in our world on Christmas Day, we pray: be born in us; be born in our families this day. Amen.

*While the world focuses on the commercial side of the holidays, we must remember that our faith is a lifelong journey of learning and worship.*
