# Advent Joy: Rejoicing in Our Family

> Bill Young reflects on the third Sunday of Advent, sharing his family’s traditions of cutting a tree, decorating, opening Christmas cards, and a heartfelt prayer of gratitude.

## The Third Sunday of Advent

Good morning, I’m Bill Young. Today is the third Sunday of Advent, the Sunday of Joy. In our parish we celebrate this day with a special Mass that reminds us to rejoice even as we await the coming of Christ.

## A Family Tree‑Farm Tradition

After Mass our family gathers at a local tree farm. We each cut down a small tree, bring it home, and spend the afternoon decorating together. My husband and son help set up the lights while the grandchildren eagerly hang ornaments. The house fills with laughter, music, and the scent of fresh pine.

## Christmas Cards and Handwritten Blessings

When we sit down for supper—our traditional stew of red, white, and green vegetables—we open the Christmas cards that arrived during the week. The children love writing their own messages, and we keep the best‑handwritten cards in a special box. These simple moments remind us of the gentle love that binds our family.

## A Simple Advent Prayer

We close the evening with a family prayer:

“Lord Jesus, you were born on Christmas Day. Be born again in our hearts and in our family. May your light shine through each of us, guiding us to share your love with others. Grant us the grace to live in peace, to follow your word, and to offer our gifts in thanksgiving. Through the merits of Jesus Christ, our Lord, hear our prayer and fulfill our desire for holiness. Amen.”

*Advent is a time to rejoice in the love of family and the light of Christ that shines through our everyday moments.*
