# Advent Week Two: Finding Joy in Small Victories
*2009-12-09*

> Bill reflects on a granddaughter’s triumph in learning to tie her shoes and connects it to the Gospel’s call to see the good in others during Advent.

## A Simple Celebration

My granddaughter recently learned to tie her shoes. One day she struggled, and the next she kept practicing until she succeeded. She was so proud that she wore her school shoes to the pool just to show everyone her new skill. Her excitement reminded me of when my own daughter learned to tie her shoes and felt a surge of confidence.

## Seeing the Good in Others

In today’s Gospel (Matthew 11:16‑19), Jesus rebukes those who criticize John the Baptist as a demon and call Him a glutton. He points out how people often miss the opportunity to pray and to recognize the good in one another. The lesson is clear: we tend to focus on what’s wrong, but we should also look for the pleasant, the beautiful, and the true in those around us.

## Advent Activity

Take a moment today to concentrate on the positive in your child’s (or anyone’s) actions. Even if they have a new favorite food you don’t like, find something kind to say. By highlighting what’s good, we help nurture faith and joy.

## Prayer for Advent Eyes

Lord Jesus, open our eyes today to the good, the beautiful, and the true. You were born into our world on Christmas Day; may we be born anew in your love. Bless our families and our community. May the light of your birth guide us to see the gifts you place before us. Amen.

*Advent invites us to notice and celebrate the small victories of faith around us.*
