# Seeking God, Finding God: The Truth That Sets Us Free
*2009-04-02*

> Bill reflects on the Gospel promise that truth sets us free, exploring how true freedom is found in the present moment with Christ, and offers a simple practice of attentive presence.

## The Gospel Promise

Today's Gospel reading, John 8:31‑32, says, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Freedom is often presented as a hallmark of an enlightened society, yet many of us wonder whether we ever truly experience it. Our responsibilities—family, work, friendships, charitable commitments—can make freedom feel like a distant ideal.

## What Freedom Looks Like

Some philosophies, such as certain Buddhist teachings, suggest that true freedom comes from detaching from desire: when we no longer cling to success, joy, or even loss, those things lose their power over us. Jesus takes this a step further. He promises to be with us in every loss and every joy, in every success and every failure. Because of His presence, we need not fear the impermanence of our circumstances.

## Living in the Present Moment

The truth that sets us free is the realization that all we truly have is the present moment. In pain and suffering we can open ourselves to growth, knowing the suffering will not last forever and that Jesus is with us. In deep joy we can savor the experience, also aware that it is fleeting, yet again accompanied by Christ. This awareness invites us to hold each moment gently, with open hands, trusting that only God is eternal.

## A Simple Lenten Practice

Inspired by Brother Lawrence’s teaching on the presence of God, try to avoid multitasking today. Give your undivided attention to whatever enters your life—whether it’s a child, a phone call, or an unpleasant task. Offer each action as a prayer, presenting it to God as a living sacrament.

## Today's Prayer

God of presence, help me to be truly present, and truly free.

*True freedom is found not in the absence of responsibilities, but in the awareness of God’s constant presence in each moment.*
