# A Melody of Hope
*2008-12-12*

> Bill Young reflects on the Feast of Light during Advent, sharing a near‑death experience story, a personal encounter with a 90‑year‑old nun, and a prayer to carry Christ’s light into the world.

## Opening Prayer

Hail and blessed be the hour in which the Son of God was born, the most pure Virgin at midnight in Bethlehem in piercing cold. In that hour of vows, safe, O God, hear my prayers, grant my desires for the merits of our Savior Jesus Christ and of His Blessed Mother. Amen.

## The Feast of Light and a Near‑Death Story

The Feast of Light reminds us of Father Rick Rendell’s near‑death experience before he entered the priesthood. In that moment he saw the radiant light of God, a vision that transformed his life. If you haven’t heard his three‑part story, I encourage you to listen; it’s a powerful testimony of conversion.

## A Winter Storm Encounter

A fierce winter storm descended on a Connecticut highway, turning the road into a white‑out. We were forced off the road and sought shelter at a nearby convent. The sister who answered the door was sad and had to check with higher authority. I looked at the roster of sisters and asked if Sister Mary Loretta, who taught kindergarten in Boston for thirty years, was available. She was upstairs, near death, but we were granted a brief reunion.

She told me, “I’m 90 years old, and you are the first former student to come back to see me.” I took this as God’s grace, affirming her lifetime of service and showing me how easy it is to become a bearer of light.

## Reflection on Light in Advent

Today is the feast of St. Lucy, the light‑bearer, celebrated with candles and a family breakfast. Emily Dixon wrote, “My candle burns at both ends. It may not last the night, but it gives a lovely light to friend and foe alike.” Advent is a time to let that light take hold. We need not wait for a snowstorm or a car breakdown to share it; we can be the bearer of light now.

## Putting Light Into Action

Let the light of Christ shine through you today—through a kind word, a deed, a phone call, a visit, or a note to a friend or stranger. Trust that grace will guide where you go.

## Closing Prayer

Jesus, Light of the World, guide my steps today. Show me how to bring your light forward.

*In Advent, each of us is called to become a bearer of Christ’s light in the world.*
