# Novena of the miraculous medal
*2008-11-16*

> Bill Young leads the community in the Novena of the Miraculous Medal, a nine-day devotion focused on the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

## Introduction to the Novena

Good morning. This is Bill Young, and welcome to the 199th episode of Catholic Podcast Ministries' Prayer and Lunch. Today, we will be starting a novena: the Novena of the Miraculous Medal. This can be prayed from November 18th through November 26th. For the nine days, the prayers remain the same, so I will be praying it today. If you wish, you can continue praying it over the next eight days by re-playing this episode.

## Opening Prayers

In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen. O God, come to my aid; O Lord, make haste to help me. Glory be to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven; He is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

## Intercession for the Church and Clergy

Immaculate Virgin Mary, may you be blessed for having chosen your humble daughter of St. Vincent de Paul in order to manifest your maternal concerns for humankind. O merciful advocate of ours, who in your first apparition to St. Catherine Labouré designed to show yourself to be crying over the miseries of your children and over all the disasters which were going to strike them—in particular over the persecutions which were going to break out against the clergy and religious communities, and who promised your particular protection to those faithful to you—turn again your eyes of mercy towards your people, tormented by the same miseries and threatened by the same calamities. Have mercy on us. Defend and sanctify the clergy, protect the Church, and exalt its gracious head. Grant that by the means of your medal, may your children be converted and saved.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.

## Seeking Divine Graces

How powerful a Queen you showed yourself to be, with your hands full of brilliant rings covering the earth with their rays—symbols of the graces which you shower upon your faithful. You said with sorrow that the rings from which the light did not come forth represented those graces that we did not ask of you, which you would like to grant. Mother of mercy, look not at our unworthiness, but through the love that you have for us, let your splendor shine upon us in all its splendor, and grant those graces which your goodness holds in reserve for those who ask for them with trust.

## The Medal as a Shield

Immaculate Virgin, whose sure refuge you may always be praised, because by giving us your medal as a powerful shield against spiritual enemies and sure protection from every danger of the body, you taught us the petitions which we must present to you in order to move your heart to mercy. Look therefore upon us, prostrated at your feet. O Mother, we invoke you with the sort of prayer for which you brought us from heaven, and remind you of the glorious privilege of your Immaculate Conception. By this virtue, we ask the graces of which we are in need.

## Mercy for the Afflicted and Victory over Evil

Immaculate Virgin, comforter of the afflicted, may you always be blessed because you wanted to render your medal an instrument of the most marvelous acts of mercy in favor of all the afflicted, using it to convert sinners, to heal the sick, and to bring consolation in all kinds of miseries. Do not allow, O merciful Mother, that the name for which your grateful people wanted to give to your medal ever be said in vain, but rather pour forth your graces and miracles upon us and on all the people we commend to you, so that your medal may be truly miraculous for us.

Immaculate Virgin, you wished to be shown in a triumphant act of crushing the head of the infernal serpent, and in your devotion to your medal, you indicated to us the secret of victory. Turn, O Mary, your eyes upon us who desire not to be the victims of our enemies and who have taken refuge under your protection. Grant that your medal may be a secure shield and a powerful weapon in order that, after we too have conquered the evil one, we may praise your Immaculate Conception forever.
