# Day 5 of the Novena for the Holy Souls in Purgatory
*2008-08-07*

> Bill Young leads the fifth day of the novena, praying for the souls in purgatory and asking for God's mercy on them and on himself.

## Opening Prayer

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. O Lord, if you had cast me into hell, there would be no deliverance from that dungeon of eternal pain. I love you above all things, infinite God, and I am sincerely sorry for having offended you again. Grant me the grace of holy perseverance and have compassion on me, and also on the holy souls suffering in purgatory.

## Traditional Prayers

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be your name; your kingdom come; your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, my love, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

## Novena Prayer for the Holy Souls

O most sweet Jesus, through the bitter sweat which you suffered in the garden of Gethsemane, have mercy on these blessed souls. O most sweet Jesus, through the pains you endured in the scourging, have mercy on them. O most sweet Jesus, through the agony of the crown of thorns, have mercy on them. O most sweet Jesus, through the suffering of carrying the cross, have mercy on them. O most sweet Jesus, through the cruel crucifixion, have mercy on them. O most sweet Jesus, through the bitter agony on the cross, have mercy on them. O most sweet Jesus, through the immense pain of your Passion, have mercy on them. Amen.

## Personal Petition

Blessed souls, I have prayed for you. I entreat you, dear souls, to intercede for me, a miserable sinner in danger of losing God forever. Pray for me, that I may be saved. Amen.

*May our prayers for the souls in purgatory also draw us closer to God's mercy.*
