# Help Us in These Difficult Times – A Prayer by Pope John Paul II
*2008-04-30*

> Bill Young reflects on Pope John Paul II’s prayer “Help Us in These Difficult Times,” offering it as a source of comfort amid natural disasters, economic hardship, and global unrest.

## Why This Prayer Matters Now

We are living through earthquakes, hurricanes, tidal waves, famine, and soaring prices for food and gasoline. These crises affect people everywhere, and they remind us how fragile our earthly security can be. In moments like these, turning to Christ and to the intercession of Mary becomes especially vital.

## The Prayer of Pope John Paul II

“Mother, we look to you with sorrowful eyes. You know all that we lack, you know our sorrows and the depths of our hearts. Mary, we ardently desire that you speak to your Son on our behalf. Tell Him about the difficult present times in which we live. Speak to Him, the Guest of our future, that tomorrow may begin today according to what we make of it.

Lord Jesus, Mother of the Lord of the future, help us in these difficult times to listen to Your Son, to hear Him every day and in every moment of our lives, even when He seems severe and demanding. May we receive the words of eternal life, the Gospel of joy, and the commandment of suffering and salvation. O Mary, with this Gospel in our hearts, help us overcome today’s difficulties so that we may reach the tomorrow to which He invites us. Amen.”

## Applying the Prayer to Our Lives

The prayer asks us to keep our ears open to Christ’s voice, especially when His call feels demanding. It reminds us that the Gospel brings both joy and the promise of salvation, even amid suffering. By entrusting our struggles to Mary’s intercession, we are invited to transform present hardships into steps toward a hopeful future.

*In every crisis, turning to Christ through Mary’s prayer helps us find the strength to endure and the hope to build a better tomorrow.*
